Students from Kōloa Early Learning School learned firsthand how food makes it from farm to the table during a visit to The Farm at Kukui’ula.
Brian Hallberg, General Manager of The Club at Kukui’ula; Roger Peckenpaugh, Assistant Landscape Manager; Joe Vittum, Director of Agronomy; and Mahealani Ho‘okano, Farm & Culture Liaison, welcomed keiki and their parents to spend the morning exploring the farm. Students learned about different fruits and vegetables, pulled beets straight from the soil, pounded kalo and enjoyed freshly pressed juice during their visit. The experience helped build an early connection to the land while encouraging healthy and nutritious food choices.
“By engaging directly with the farm on the property, the students gain a deeper understanding of where their food comes from,” said Hallberg. “You can see the students’ excitement, by the way their faces light up, that they’ll take what they learned from here beyond the classroom and into their daily lives.”
Kukui‘ula plans to host additional school visits throughout the academic calendar year to continue creating engaging, fun learning opportunities for youth across our community.
